Kathmandu, Nepal was a common
stop on the famous 'Hippy Trail' of the 1960's and
70's, not least because of the legality of
hashish where it was sold openly in Government
Licensed shops until 1973 when, due to US pressure
on Nepal all hashish shops had to close down.
Possibly the most famous of these were the two Eden
Hashish Centres, the original was at 5/1
Basantpur in the famous "Freak Street" hippy
district (Kathmandu has a road, Jochen Tole,
nicknamed Freak Street in memory of the
thousands of hippies who visited Kathmandu), and the
second shop was located at 5/259 Ombahal.
The memory of the shops lives on
in the now famous
advertising posters from the two shops.
