The 'Stoner Movie' as a cinematic genre

There are many movies about "stoners" - films with characters who frequently use cannabis but many of these films are not, by definition, stoner films. Examples include the Kevin Smith films ‘Chasing Amy’ and ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ starring Jay and Silent Bob AKA Bluntman & Chronic (a blunt being a cigar filled with cannabis, and a chronic being a very potent strain of marijuana / cannabis).

A stoner film is a movie whose story line is patently centred around cannabis. The series of movies in the 1970s starring Cheech & Chong are archetypal "stoner movies”. The Harold & Kumar films are probably the most contemporary equivalent. Most stoner movies have certain elements and themes in common. The template involves two male friends who are either stoned or trying to get stoned and usually have some task to complete. Stoner movies are always comedies, the plots of which are simplistic enough to be followed while missing many details, which allows individuals who are stoned to be able to stay aware of the storyline.  In contrast to the archetypal ‘drug movie’ stoner movies usually also feature inept policemen.
